Fire Safety: An Employer's Guide

Fire Safety: An Employers Guide

Publisher – The Stationary Office

ISBN – 0 11 341229 0

This is the book we issue to delegates on our Fire Risk Assessment Awareness course.

Backed by such prestigious bodies as the Health & Safety Executive, the Home Office, the Scottish Executive and the Northern Ireland D of E, this is the definitive guide to fire safety for employers.

At a time when fire safety law is a very complex topic, this guide doesn’t carry the status of UK law, but its claim is that if you follow its advice, you will, under normal circumstances, be complying with the law’s demands.

Its 84 pages are written in easy to understand language that explains fire safety issues from basic principles to practical operational implementation.

For ease of explanation, the guide is written in 3 parts:

  • Part 1 - briefly explains in easy to understand language what Fire Risk Assessments are all about and why they are an essential foundation for your fire safety

  • Part 2 - takes you step by step through the fire risk assessment process, providing comprehensive examples of what you need to look out for, how you record your findings and what actions you need to take as a result of your risk assessment

  • Part 3 - is a more in-depth treatment of fire safety precautions that is not intended to be read through from start to finish (though it is highly readable). Instead, it provides you with an information resource to dip into whenever questions arise that need fuller explanation.

A document of such modest size does not purport to make you a professional fire fighter – a profession that demands dedicated commitment over years of training and study. However, it is as sound a foundation for the fire layman as you are likely to find. In addition, it offers the peace of mind that if you follow its advice, you are unlikely to be criticised by any of the bodies who have backed its publication – at least you won’t be criticised in terms of fire safety.
