COSHH Awareness

Overview

People may be exposed to hazardous substances at work that can cause serious illness and can even be fatal. Such exposure can also result in reduced productivity, lost earnings and expensive prosecutions.

Under the COSHH Regulations, employers must provide sufficient information, instruction and training so that employees are fully aware of the risks to health from exposure and the precautions they need to take.

Objectives

The aims of this course are:

To raise employee awareness of the health and safety issues associated with using and handling hazardous substances.
To provide instruction in appropriate control measures to reduce the risks.


Who should attend

This course is suitable for people in the following roles:

Managers, Supervisors and Team Leaders.
Employees who are required to use or handle hazardous substances.


Duration

The course typically lasts around 4 hours, although this can vary depending on the number and types of substances that are in use and the type and nature of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) that is provided.

Preparation

Any existing COSHH assessments and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements should be made available to the instructor before the start of the course.

Materials

A selection of handouts is provided that are appropriate to the risks being considered.
