Implementing ISO14001
The following steps are typical when developing and implementing a full Environment Management System (EMS). Some organisations will need to undertake all the steps, whereas others may already have many processes in place that can be incorporated into a formal system.
You may choose to outsource all the work to specialists or prefer to use in-house staff to do some or all the work, and you may wish to implement your systems as quickly as possible or over an extended period of time.
Whatever your circumstances, we can help you formulate a comprehensive plan for implementing your EMS and then help you with as little or as much of the work as you like.
In broad outline, a typical Implementation Plan covers the following areas:
- Compliance Assessment
Assess your organisation's existing operations against current legal obligations to establish the level of compliance that already exists and to determine where further work is needed.
- Environmental Management System
Develop a specification for a full Environment Management System, typically including:
- Your environment policy commitment
- Listing and complying with your organisation's environmental and legal duties such as Climate Change Levy Agreements
- Identifying those areas where your organisation impacts or could impact the environment for good or bad, setting targets and objectives for improvement and planning for how to achieve them
- Preparing for and turning your implementation plan into reality
- Environmental Training
Prepare and deliver a training programme that provides a basic awareness of environmental obligations, management responsibilities for environmental performance and the role of every employee to follow through on the environmental policy.
- Environmental Monitoring
Identify the requirements and methods for monitoring environmental performance as impacted by your organisation's activities.
- Waste Management
Measures for ensuring your organisation is able to achieve as much or more, whilst minimising waste and with less consumption of scarce resources.
- Energy Efficiency
Practical measures for reducing your energy consumption, identifying most cost effective energy tariffs as well as access to Climate Change Levy agreements.
- Environmental Auditing
Training for your organisation's own staff to carry out routine internal reviews to support independent Annual Auditing of systems and performance against ISO14001.
