Specific Risk Assessment

Overview

Typically, a Specific Risk Assessment is identified as being necessary from either a Health and Safety Audit, a General Risk Assessment, another Risk Assessment or perhaps by management or other staff members.

It is typically required because a particular activity or set of circumstances has been identified as potentially hazardous and a suitable and sufficient assessment needs to be carried out by a competent person to ensure suitable risk control measures are in place.

The circumstances giving rise to the requirement may be ongoing and applicable to the organisation's routine business processes, or may apply to a one-off event or activity.

Objectives

The purpose of the Specific Risk Assessment is to identify the hazards associated with the activity or event, assess the risks arising from them, their severity, who is likely to be exposed to them and what controls, if any, are in place to manage them.

Recommendations are made to either eliminate the risks or, where this is not feasible, to reduce them as far as reasonably practicable.

Methodology

The Assessment examines in detail the activity or event with the aim of identifying risks to persons or property, particular those risks that are subject to health and safety legislation.

The assessment encompasses:

  • Examination of relevant health and safety documentation, including any previous risk assessments carried out for this or related activities/events.
  • Physical examination of associated premises or equipment.
  • Interviews of employees or other persons involved, particularly anyone who may be considered at risk.
  • Identification of hazards associated with any of the above and consideration of any precautions already in place to control the risks.

Findings from the assessment are included in a report, along with recommended actions to ensure risks are properly managed.

Duration

Most Assessments can be completed within a day, though more complex situations may require more time.
