Permit to Work Systems

Overview

A Permit-to-Work system ensures a formal check is made whenever hazardous work is to be undertaken. It establishes that all elements of a ‘safe system of work’ are in place before anyone is allowed into areas where the Permit-to-Work system is in operation.

The Permit-to-Work is also a means of communication between site managers, supervisors, and those carrying out the hazardous work.

Essential features of a permit-to-work system are:

Clear identification of who may authorise particular jobs (and any limits to their authority) and who is responsible for specifying the necessary precautions
Provisions for ensuring that contractors engaged to carry out work are included
Training and instruction in the issue of permits
Monitoring and auditing to ensure that the system works as intended.

This course covers the essential features.
