Course Content
The course covers the following topics:
- Properties of asbestos and its effects on health, including the increased risk of lung cancer for workers who smoke
- Types, uses, and likely occurrences of asbestos and ACMs (Asbestos Containing Materials) in UK buildings and plant
- General emergency procedures, for example an uncontrolled release of asbestos dust in the workplace
- Risk assessment and how to avoid risks from asbestos. For example, for building works, no employer should carry out a work that disturbs the fabric of a building unless the employer has confirmed that ACMs are not present
Overview
Employees require awareness training if their work could potentially expose them to asbestos. In particular, training should be provided for workers in the refurbishment and maintenance trades where it is foreseeable that their work might disturb the fabric of the building, exposing Asbestos Containing Material (ACMs).
Exemption only applies where is can be conclusively demonstrated that buildings which require refurbishment/maintenance work are completely free from ACMs.
