Overview

A key element of the "Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2007" (CDM 2007) is adding value to a construction project.

A practical understanding of the designer's duties is essential, especially when assessing designs at the start of a project.

Under these regulations, Designers have a principal duty to eliminate hazards and mitigate risk. In addition, there are duties contained in the "Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974" and other safety legislation that Designers need to know, understand and apply.

This course reflects best practice for Designers who wish to evaluate their current CDM arrangements and make appropriate changes.

It is worth noting that the HSE may treat the industry guidance, followed in this course, as an established standard.

This course provides a detailed treatment of the CDM 2007 Regulations, illustrating their likely impact. It is suited to Designers or Design Practices who wish to undertake a review of their current CDM procedures and arrangements and to follow best practice.

Objectives

The Designers’ Course provides a practical detailed understanding of the requirements of CDM 2007 that enables Designers to discharge their duties in the most effective way.

By the end of the course delegates will:

  • Have a detailed understanding of their duties.
  • Know what the HSE consider to be best practice.

The course follows guidance published by Constructionskills.

The HSE has endorsed the guidance, which outlines best practice to enable Designers to maximise benefit from CDM 2007.
