Course Content

The course covers the following topics:

  • Role of Designated First Aider.
  • Care and Treatment of an Unconscious Person.
  • Treatment of wounds and bleeding.
  • Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation.
  • Signs, symptoms and treatment of breathing difficulties.
  • Signs, symptoms and treatment of circulatory problems.
  • Signs and symptoms of common ailments.
  • Treatment of common ailments.

Overview

Under the Health and Safety (First Aid) at Work Regulations an employer must provide suitable arrangements for rendering First Aid to persons injured at work.

Dependent on the assessed risks associated with the business and the availability of qualified assistance, persons should be trained to either "designated" or "appointed" level.

This course covers the essential knowledge that is needed for the role of "Designated" Person.

The course content and materials have been approved by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), and EDP are HSE accredited training providers.

Objectives

This course is designed to assist employers in providing suitably qualified first aid persons when the risks have been assessed as being in the category where a “Designated” Person is required.

Who should attend

Persons who are deemed suitable and are intended to fulfil the role of a “Designated” Person for the administration of First Aid

Duration

  • The basic course is delivered over a period of 4 days (24 contact hours), including an examination. The certificate issued on successfully completing the examination is valid for a period not exceeding 3 years.
  • Refresher training is delivered over a period of 2 days (12 contact hours).

Preparation

Participants should be capable of undertaking in depth theoretical learning and should be of such a disposition as to be able to take control and stay calm in an emergency.

Materials

First Aid Manuals are issued during the course.

Certification

On successful attainment of “competency skills” a First Aid at Work certificate is awarded.
