Course Content

The course covers the following topics:

  • Legal requirements. What the law says about fire safety arrangements
  • Responsibilities. What the organisation is responsible for and what the individual is responsible for.
  • Types of fires. How to react to them
  • Fire prevention. Typical situations in which fires can start and how to avoid them.
  • Evacuation procedures:

    • Action to be taken when fire occurs
    • How and when to sound the alarm
    • How and when to call the fire service
    • Action to be taken on arrival of the fire service
  • Fire drills. Their purpose, frequency and results.
  • Fire extinguishers. Different types of extinguisher and their uses. Who should and should not use extinguishers under different circumstances.

Overview

Under current legislation, employers are required to provide Fire Training for all employees.

This is a short course that is intended to raise fire safety awareness and provide clear instruct on what employees should do in the event of a fire.

Objectives

  • To educate members of staff about fire safety and what they should and should not do in order to prevent fire breaking out.
  • To instruct how to recognise the need for evacuation of the premises in an emergency and how this should be done in a prompt and supervised manner.

Who should attend

This course is appropriate for people from any sector and at any level who need to understand the dangers posed by fire in the workplace and the safe way to respond should a fire start. No prior knowledge is assumed.

Duration

This is a short course, typically between 1 and 1½ hours duration.

Preparation

To gain maximum benefit from the course, delegates are advised to be familiar with local evacuation arrangements for their place of work, including evacuation routes and assembly point.
