Course Content

This course is very practical in nature. Both the 1 day and 2 day courses allow for delegates to conduct a 'live' internal audit.

The preparation and reporting of the live audit findings form an integral part of the course.

In outline, the course covers the following:

  • Overview of environmental issues and legislative requirements
  • ISO 14001 Introduction
  • The internal audit process
  • How to plan for internal audits
  • How to devise audit checklists
  • Internal auditing techniques – rights and wrongs
  • How to gather objective evidence during the audit
  • How to report your audit findings

Overview

Internal auditing is an essential component of a successful Environmental Management System (EMS). However the quality of internal audits can often let down an otherwise successful system.

This course, delivered over 1 or 2 days (depending on the auditing experience of the delegates), ensures your internal audit team can work effectively and smoothly to produce factual and correctly scoped internal EMS audit reports.

The course is ideal for in-house delivery in order to ensure that your company's audit team can undertake internal EMS audits to the required standard.

Objectives

By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:

  • Understand the role of the internal audit process within an Environmental Management System (EMS)
  • Explain the purpose and structure of ISO 14001
  • Understand how to plan and prepare for an internal EMS audit
  • Understand how to gather objective evidence during an audit
  • Understand how to write factual audit reports that will improve the effectiveness of the EMS
  • Gain experience of undertaking an environmental audit under supervision

Who should attend

The one day course is designed for persons who are already familiar with basic internal audit techniques (e.g. trained internal quality auditors) and therefore only need greater emphasis on the audit evidence required to demonstrate compliance with ISO 14001.

The two day course is designed for persons who are new to auditing in general, including environmental auditing, and require knowledge of all the essential tools and techniques required to become a competent internal environmental auditor. The course is also useful for those who may have received audit training in the past, but have had little opportunity to use their skills and therefore require 'refresher' training.

Duration

This course can be run over one or two days depending on the needs of the delegates:

  • One day for delegates with previous auditing experience (e.g. trained quality auditors)
  • Two days for delegates with little or no previous auditing experience

Preparation

No preparation is required for the two day course. Previous auditing training and experience are a pre-requisite for the one day course.

Materials

Each delegate receives a comprehensive set of course materials, including handouts, notes and references for further information.

Certification

Each delegate who successfully completes the course receives an EDP Certificate of Attendance.
