Overview

A Permit-to-Work system ensures a formal check is made whenever hazardous work is to be undertaken. It establishes that all elements of a ‘safe system of work’ are in place before anyone is allowed into areas where the Permit-to-Work system is in operation.

The Permit-to-Work is also a means of communication between site managers, supervisors, and those carrying out the hazardous work.

Essential features of a Permit-to-Work system, which are covered by the course are:

  • Clear definition of who may authorise particular jobs (and any limits to their authority) and who is responsible for specifying essential precautions.
  • Provision for ensuring that contractors, who are engaged to carry out work, are covered by the system.
