Outsourcing FAQ’s

Why should I consider outsourcing my Health and Safety?

Should you wish to do so, it is perfectly feasible to set up your own health and safety section and handle everything in-house, but can you be sure to have all the competencies needed to comply with the latest legislation, such as Asbestos Management, Contractor Management or the new Fire Reform Order. Do you have cover in case an accident occurs when key personnel are on holiday or off sick and do you have continuity for when key people move on?
EDP specialises in health, safety and the environment. All our consultants are qualified and sufficiently experienced to decide what is important and what isn't. With EDP you have all the resources of a dedicated consultancy available to handle whatever crisis arises. Read more about the benefits of working with EDP.

I am not looking to outsource as we have an internal health and safety team but how do I get better advice?

If you still prefer to handle most of your health and safety in-house, you can call on EDP for specialist services, such as advice on a major construction project, or to provide a training programme for your staff. In effect, EDP can be your "insurance" in case you lose key members of staff or need to cover for other resource shortages.

I already have a comprehensive health and safety policy in-house, why do I need a Safety Management System?

Your Policy is your stated commitment, which is the essential first step in health and safety. However, unless you put your documented intentions into practice, they are only evidence that you know what you should do even though you haven't done anything. For a brief overview of how EDP can help you turn your policy into reality, see EDP's Service Delivery.

What’s different about EDP's Safety Management System?

Plenty companies who will offer you an off-the-shelf Safety Management System. At EDP we believe that every organisation has its own personality, culture and, of course, risks that need to be addressed.
For this reason, we believe in assessing your particular circumstances and tailoring our recommendations accordingly, so that you are covered for your own specific risk-profile - nothing more and nothing less. Our aim, therefore, is to be as cost and effort efficient as possible, combined with maximum effectiveness of our policies and processes.

How much does a Safety Management System cost?

In terms of the up front investment it is impossible to suggest an amount without knowing more about your organisation, for example, the people you employ, the kind of the work they do and the workplaces where they do it (i.e. People, Processes and Premises).
What we do know is that if things go wrong, the cost of ignoring health and safety can be much greater than addressing it properly in the first place. Furthermore, when properly implemented, a good Safety Management System can save you money, so that all-in-all it results in a net gain.
The best option is to give us a call for a no-obligation consultation at which we are able to give you a much better idea of what is involved.

I only need risk assessments completing, can EDP still help?
Some organisation have most of their health and safety already covered but need additional help to bring them up to full compliance with legislation - for example with some risk assessments in specialist areas.
You can call in EDP to undertake any individual services you need - simply let us know your requirements. However, we also advise that legal compliance, though laudable, should be only the first target. All health and safety standard models aim to go beyond this to a regime of continuous improvement. This is where your employees, and ultimately, your profits will benefit most.

Who are EDP anyway? Why should we trust you with our policies and systems?

You can read the EDP Corporate Overview about the history and growth of the company (requires Adobe Acrobat Reader) or you can view some of our Case Studies.
In addition you can read our commitment to you by way of a Guarantee and if you give us a few minutes of your time we will show you what we can do.
