EDP recently attended the National Grid Property Awards at The Oval, London, where it triumphed as the winner of not one but two awards.

  • Simon Penney took centre stage as the winner of the Best SHE Leadership Support award for the second year running.
  •    EDP was recognised for its work on the complex demolition project at Deal and secured the award for Best Property Strategy Implementation.

About the project

EDP’s victory at the National Grid Property Commercial Awards was for their exemplary work on the gasholder at Deal, but this project was not a standard operation. The existing structure had an earlier gasholder inside it, and the outer concrete tank was found to be pre-tensioned, unlike any other in the portfolio. The gasholder’s as-built drawings (showing the unusual construction) were discovered post-tender, which triggered a complete change in our approach.

The project team and contractor, Erith, worked together to overcome the many complexities and challenges, requiring a dynamic programme with adaptive methodology and numerous redesigns to achieve the project objective. Without the collaboration across the team, the completion of this project wouldn’t have been possible!

It was an unusual and challenging project, where sometimes being the person to challenge proposed methodologies and designs that ultimately affect health and safety often felt like we were butting heads with contractors with alternative views. National Grid, however, could see that what we did to challenge was of the upmost importance, ensuring the project went smoothly with no issues, and ultimately it knew the importance of our role in protecting its values and image.

“To be nominated in various team projects was great, but to also be nominated individually for the SHE leadership award alongside my colleague and line manager, Simon (who did win it for the second time in a row!), was really special.
